Racial issues have come to the forefront of American politics with the arrest of Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. Gates was arrested outside his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 16. This incident spawned a controversy that drew attention from President Obama, who is now trying to diffuse the tension with a "beer summit." Charges have since been dropped, but the President, Gates and his arresting officer Sgt. James Crowley will meet at the White house for beer and an airing of the issues.

Pre-eminent Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. was arrested outside his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 16, 2009, charged with disorderly conduct. A passerby had reported suspicious behavior on behalf of a neighbor when she noticed Gates struggling to get inside his home, returning from a trip to China.
