The origins: Crazed (and possibly possessed) writer Jack Torrance comes after his family with a hatchet. After hacking a hole in their bathroom door, he peers into the room and utters the line, taken from Ed McMahon’s classic “Tonight Show” introduction of Johnny Carson.

Proper use: In high-pressure situations in which a sudden burst of manic energy is required to complete the task at hand.

Improper use: Party introductions, job interviews or any interactions with anyone named Johnny.
