There was a minor clash between NYPD and Occupy Wall Street protestors in lower Manhattan, but it could have been much worse. In fact, it could have been a tragedy; the kind that lingers in history.
Lines were drawn this morning as Brookfield Office Properties asked police to clear Zuccotti Park so they could clean up. Extra police were called in, extra protestors showed up. It was going to be a battle.
The protestors have the Constitutional right to peaceful assembly and free speech. But Brookfield has Constitutional property rights. How would you like protestors showing up in your back yard?
Both sides had right with them. Both sides were ready to fight for their rights. And then Brookfield did something wonderful. They asked the police to stand down and they opened up negotiations with the protestors.
The company should be applauded. I am certain there would have been violence and injuries today. The video would have been shown around the world. We would have been no better than the oppressive governments we condemn. We are supposed to be better.
Today we were. Thank you Brookfield.
