A fire broke out at an New Jersey home early Wednesday morning, and two vicitms were burned so badly that they need to be airlifted to the hospital.

According to fire officials, the blaze began when a microwave oven malfunctioned and burst into flames inside a home located at 52 Garden Street in Edision at about 4:40 a.m.

In the residence were two adults, a man and woman, in their early 20s and at least two children.

The fire spread to the couple's mattress and the two adults were burned when they tried to extinguish the fire.

The woman's hair caught on fire andreports say she was severely burned on over 50 percent of her body. The man had burns on his arms and hands.





The female victim was transported by EMS to the lawn of Edison High School in order to be medically evacuated via helicopter to the Burn Center at St. Barnabas Hospital.

The male victim was also airlifted to the same hospital from Edison's City Hall.

St. Barnabas Hospital is located over 25 miles away in Livingston, and is the nearest area hospital with a burn unit.

The children escaped the home unharmed, and there are no reports of other injuries.

There appears to be no sign of foul play.

Fire officials are continuing their investigation.
