SHEEPSHEAD BAY, N.Y. (WPIX)—
Sandwiched between two homes on Voorhies Avenue, a vacant lot sits at the center of a Brooklyn Battle Royale. At issue: religion and dueling claims of racism."In the end we would like to have good relations with our neighbors because they are going to be our neighbors," Allowey Ahmed said outside his Sheepshead Bay home.
Ahmed has applied for permits to build a mosque on the property, but he says someone is trying to sabotage him. A website called BayPeople.org published photos of a disturbing flier that claims to be raising money for the Muslim house of worship. The flier makes the frightening statement, "we are peaceful people and mostly do not support terrorists."
"'Mostly do not support terrorism?,' said the indignant mosque developer. "As if we have people who are amongst us supporting terrorism?"
Ahmed says none of his congregants support terror. He believes stereotyping neighbors in this predominantly Russian Jewish community faked the flier to try and derail the mosque
"They are really stooping to a new low to stop us from practicing our religion."
Ahmed's son Abrahim chimed in, "It's kind of upsetting to see that from our neighbors. Because we came here to this country for the freedom and all that. I'm American just like everybody else, you know. "
Grigory Kalman is one of the neighbors who opposes the mosque. He has raised $7,000 to challenge the building permits in court. He's also signed up more than 100 neighbors to his cause, but says religious prejudice has nothing to do with his opposition.
"I only care about the issues of noise, traffic, parking, and the nuisance of our lives," said Kalman
Though Kalman authored the website BayPeople.org, he says he has no idea who wrote the flier. He and several other neighbors of the proposed block say they found the fliers in their mailboxes.
The New York City Buildings Department is currently reviewing permit applications for the mosque. Allowey Ahmed expects to break ground on the building in a matter of months.
