MORRISTOWN, NJ -
Bed bugs have taken over a 100-unit public housing building in Morristown, NJ, and professional exterminators are waving the white flag, saying they are powerless against the infestation.
"The entire building has to be emptied of all people and furniture," Mayor Donald Cresitello announced Tuesday to the Morristown Town Council. "This is a very serious problem and we have to do something drastic."
As the owners of the bug-ridden building on Early Street, the Federal Government's HUD-supported Housing Authority should bear the cost of providing temporary housing for the low-income residents and replacing furniture, said the mayor.
"The people living there did nothing wrong," Cresitello said, "They're living there and paying their rent. It was the Housing Authority's fault that things got to this point."
Conspicuously absent from the meeting was Town Council President John Cryan, who, police say, was arrested on Oct. 31 and taken into custody following a drunken altercation outside the Tavern off the Green. Cryan is being charged with aggravated assault on a town police officer.
