NEW YORK (WPIX) -
Students at the Beacon School and LaGuardia High School in Manhattan staged a protest at City Hall Friday, urging officials to let them hold bake sales in order to fund the publication of their literary magazine and other extra curricular activities.
School officials say The "Beacon Ink," which features students' short stories, poetry and full-color artwork, costs nearly $2,400 to print 200 issues of the monthly publication. They say the money for the magazine comes mainly from bake sales the students hold.
The school - which currently does not have enough in its budget to fund after-school problems - say the sales are an easy way for students to work together and make money for a good cause.
However, at the end of June, the Department of Education along with the Department of Health, instated a new wellness policy for New York City schools in which strict nutrition guides were put into place - ultimately banning the bake sales.
Under the new policy, Only Parent Teacher Associations are permitted to hold bake sales once a month and after the last school lunch period.
Students at the Beacon School are just one of the many being affected by the new restrictions. In fact, the protest was organized by students at LaGuardia High School who are facing similar problems.
One school from the Bronx has started up a Facebook group, urging city officials to allow bake sales in order to fund clubs and after-school activities.
