AIRMONT, N.Y. (WPIX) -
Fire officials in Rockland County say a cat is to blame for a huge apartment fire that forced dozens of senior citizens out of their apartment building Monday.
Airmont Fire Inspector Kim Weppler says the animal knocked down two candles off a dresser. The flames reportedly engulfed a bed spread and quickly traveled up the wall.
The fire was contained in the apartment where the flames initially started.
An 88-year-old man was treated for smoke inhalation.
Several residents complained of smoke and water damage. Authorities said the cat and residents inside the building are doing okay.
