WOOD-RIDGE, N.J. (WPIX)—
Hundreds of parents students and teachers gathered to protest the Archdioceses' decision to close Our Lady of the Assumption School in New Jersey. The Wednesday announcement comes off the heels of last week's decision to close another Catholic school in South Bergen County -- St. Joseph's School in East Rutherford. The schools are closing due to lack of students.
Rev. Brian Cullinane, Our Lady of the Assumption School's parish priest, met with at least 350 protesters and said he would present a plan to the Archdioceses to add at least 60 new students by May.
He estimates the new enrollments will create at least $210,000 in revenue.
Staffers also point out that the school will also enroll at least 60 new students in the next school year due to the closure of St. Joseph's School.
Our Lady of the Assumption School, located at 151 First Street in Wood-Ridge, was founded in 1938 by Franciscan Friars and the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany.
The school offers an all-day kindergarten program and serves students from pre-K to 8th grade.
