STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (WPIX) - He likes to move his brush to the 'Battle Hymn of the Republic,' as he paints his favorite subject: The American Flag.

"You look close, you really don't get an idea of it," artist Scott LoBaido told PIX News. "When you go back, it all falls into place."

To appreciate Scott LoBaido's work you need to step back and see the big picture, which in his latest project means a trip across Staten Island. LoBaido is helping an organization called "Where to Turn" beautify the borough by wiping out graffiti, replacing the eyesores with his eye-catching flag murals.

"It really has been a deterrent which is the number one thing," said LoBaido. "They won't come back and touch this wall."

The cleanup initiative is dependent on sponsors who typically contribute $1,000 for the artwork. Our Island Realty commissioned LoBaido to create an image called 'Pride.'

"We just thought it might be a nice thing to have on our building," said business owner, Chris Reno.

The goal was to have 50 murals ready by July Fourth. But with all the rain last month, the project had to be pushed back.

The concept isn't new to LoBaido. He went cross country three years ago, and using a rooftop as his canvas, painted one flag in every state. Back on Staten Island, he's putting the finishing touches on his 38th flag in the schoolyard of his alma mater. He wants to complete the remaining 12 by Labor Day.

When PIX News caught up with LoBaido, two little girls couldn't help but stare at his unique rendition of the 'Stars and Stripes.'

"If I had this in my backyard," said one of the little girls, "I would adore it."
