Over 3 Dozen Inmates Charged With Having Cell Phones
BORDENTOWN. N.J. (WPIX) - More than two-dozen inmates from a prisons in the Garden State have been indicted for illegally possessing cell phones in the facilities.

The New Jersey Attorney General's office announced Tuesday that 35 inmates - many of whom are reputed gang members - have been charged with possessing cell phones. Two of them are reportedly from South Woods State Prison.

The gang members are accused of using their cell phones to stay connected to the world of crime, police said.

Carrying a cell phone in prison is a third-degree crime that carries a maximum sentence of five years behind bars and a $15,000 fine. The additional time would be added on to the inmate's current sentence.

Nearly 400 cell phones have been confiscated from inmates over the past year.

New Jersey is testing the use of cell phone detection technology and officials said they have also begun training dogs to recognize phones by their odor.
