LAKE GROVE, N.Y. (WPIX)—
A woman posing as a fortune teller has been arrested for scamming a customer out of more than $1,000 by convincing her she was cursed.Tracy Evans, 22, was arrested in a sting operation at Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove Friday.
Police say say an 18-year-old Long Island woman was approached by the fortune teller at the mall, and paid for two initial readings that cost $25 and $100. Two days later, Evans told the woman she was cursed, and offered to lift it for $1,250.
After a $600 down payment, the fake psychic gave her a stone and a Ziploc bag full of body wash.
She also tried to sell the woman candles for $550, which she claimed would get rid of negative energy, police said.
Evans is charged with fraudulent accosting, fortune telling and attempted grand larceny.
