GALEN, N.Y. (WPIX) - An upstate man was arrested and charged Tuesday after police said he tried to set a car on fire with his wife, his adult daughter and granddaughter all inside.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, John Thoms Jr., 50, got into a heated argument that turned physical with his estranged wife Debora Thoms at her home in Galen. In an attempt to get away from her husband, Debora Thoms fled the home and locked herself in her car.

Thoms adult daughter and granddaughter were home at the time, and at one point jumped into the car with Deborah, police said.

"John allegedly retrieved a five gallon can of gas and began pouring gas over the vehicle Debora was in and on the walls of Debora's home," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Police said Thoms then lit a match and threw it towards the vehicle, however the flame went out and did not ignite the fuel.

John Thoms has been charged with attempted murder, attempted arson, criminal mischief and endangering the welfare of a child.
