MANHATTAN ( WPIX) -- It gives the terms "studio apartment" a whole different meaning. For Kevin Patterson and his tiny West End Avenue lodgings, the 210-square feet of luxury makes his abode the smallest -- and coolest -- in Manhattan, according to ApartmentTherapy.com.
At $1,550 a month, what else can you ask for on the Upper West Side?
"About 4 steps in either direction you change rooms," resident Patterson describes his humble and trendy abode.
"My tips for living in a small space is to maximize every piece of furniture that you buy," Patterson explains. "This sofa converts into a sleeper, it also has storage for linens underneath and ... the bed has cabinetry all below."
The large mirror also gives the room a greater feeling of depth he says.
"Anything to expand the space and that tall mirror really helps to make the room seem longer." said Patterson.
White paint also makes the room seem larger and brighter, while a paper divider gives the studio more of a two room feel. Another hot space-saving tip, Patterson suggests installing high shelves that add extra storage space and keep an open, uncluttered feel.
So what do you win for being awarded New York's smallest, coolest apartment? Patterson received a $2,000 gift certificate to where else -- a furniture store. Obviously he can't fit anymore furniture in his apartment, so it's time to move on, he told PIX News.
"I've been here for about 20 months, I'll probably move out now that real estate prices are so great all over the city," Patterson says. "To a bigger place? Probably a little bit bigger. But I do like small spaces."
