BROOKLYN, N.Y. (WPIX) -
The family of a mentally challenged resident of a Brooklyn care facility is calling for an investigation into an alleged assault.
Kimberly Creary says she received a phone call Sept. 23, informing her that her mentally ill brother, Colbert Creary, 43, had been rushed to Kings Brook Jewish Medical Center five hours earlier.
Colbert Creary -- both physically and mentally handicapped -- is a resident of the state-certified Institute of Community Living in Brooklyn.
In a statement released Sunday, Kimberly said her brother appeared to have been brutally assaulted, and treated due to damage to his eye. He was later released from the hospital just before 7 p.m. that evening.
When the care facility failed to provide any explanation, the family filed a complaint with police. But, because Colbert could not communicate what had happened to him, officers failed to draw up a report.
Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes and the New York State Office of Mental Health have now launched an investigation into the matter. The Crearys want to know how Colbert ended up in the hospital, and why it took the facility so long to contact his family about the incident.
