MOUNT VERNON (WPIX) -
The police commissioner of Mount Vernon has resigned from his Westchester County post to head the White Plains' public safety commissioner.
After serving the Mount Vernon Police Department for over 3 1/2-years, Commissioner David Chong, 51, handed in his letter of resignation last week, according to Mount Vernon Mayor Clinton Young. Chong's last day on the Mount Vernon police force is December 31.
The change-up comes on the heels of White Plains Mayor-elect Adam Bradley's announcement to appoint Chong as head of the city's police and fire bureau in January.
"I'm delighted to announce that (Chong) will be the person I'll appoint as public safety commissioner," Bradley said, describing Chong as a "personal friend" for many years.
Chong, will be replacing Frank Straub, who resigned from office in November. Before his role as police commissioner; Chong served as Straub's deputy commissioner.
Before his career in Westchester County, Chong served the New York Police Department for 22 years and retired with the ranking of commander.
During his time with the NYPD, he was involved with tactical patrols, narcotics, organized crime and counter terrorism.
Chong made headlines in April 2008 when he openly sought Portuguese-speaking volunteers and officers through a news conference and print ads to assist the growing community of Portuguese-speaking Brazilians in Mount Vernon.
Chong is looking forward to returning to White Plains, the city he served for 3 1/2 years before departing in 2005 for his post in Mount Vernon.
'It's been a pleasure to serve the people of Mount Vernon for the past few years, but seldom does one have the opportunity to go home," Chong said, "I'm returning to a department that I'm familiar with and that I have the utmost respect for."
