HACKENSACK, N.J. ( WPIX) -- A Bergen County grand jury has indicted the mayor of Carlstadt, New Jersey and his former wife on charges they stole insurance benefits from the borough.

Mayor William Roseman and his ex-wife, Lori Lewin, were divorced in July of 2000. Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli accused Roseman of failing to notify authorities within 60 days of the divorce, and allowing her to remain on the borough's benefits plan.

The prosecutor says Lewin obtained prescription benefits totaling more than $7,000 under the borough's prescription benefits plan from July 2000 to January 2008, and she continued to receive benefits under the borough's medical benefits plan through 2003.

Roseman is accused of presiding over council meetings where funding for the borough's medical and prescription plans was approved. During that time, his former wife was allowed to remain on the plan. The pair will be scheduled to appear for arraignment in Superior Court in about four weeks.

Molinelli said Roseman and Lewin have each been charged with conspiracy to commit theft by deception, theft by deception and official misconduct. Roseman, 49, and Lewin, 46, could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
