New Year's Eve Ball Gets New Crystal (December 27, 2009)
NEW YORK (WPIX) -
Time Square's New Year's Eve ball is sporting some extra shine.
Workers are set to install nearly 300 new Waterford crystal triangles on the famous ball Sunday.
The new crystals feature an interlocking ribbon pattern, woven into a celtic knot.
This year's ball is a geodesic sphere, containing more than 2,600 crystal triangles that weigh about 6.8 ounces each. They're all custom built to withstand wind, rain and snow.
The ball measure 12 feet in diameter, and weights nearly 11,875 pounds.
The ball-drop tradition -- set to drop 400 feet at midnight, December 31st -- dates back to 1907.
