Al Pacino To Perform Shakespeare In Central Park
NEW YORK (WPIX) - Academy Award winner Al Pacino will make a triumphant return to the New York stage as Shylock in Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" in June 2010, New York's Public Theater announced Monday.

This will mark the first time in seven years the celebrated actor appears on stage in the Big Apple.

"Merchant" will be part of the hugely popular "Shakespeare in the Park" series that runs annually in Central Park.

Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway was the last A-list star featured in the series this past June.

"Rent" alum Jesse L. Martin and Jesse Tyler Ferguson from "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" are slated to join Pacino on stage for the production.

"The Winter's Tale," which will run repertory with "Merchant" through Aug. 1, will not feature Pacino, who reportedly has a scheduling conflict with rehearsals.

Pacino, 69, first made a splash on the New York stage when he starred in Shakespeare's "Richard III" in 1979 on Broadway. He went on to win an Academy Award in 1993's "A Scent Of A Woman" after receiving seven previous nominations.
