PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (WPIX)—
More than 100 puppies rescued from 14 Missouri "puppy mills" will be up for adoption on Long Island this Saturday. The dogs are currently under the care of the North Shore Animal League America (NSALA), which announced Tuesday that the dogs from their partner, National Mill Dog Rescue, had arrived. Before they go up for adoption, all the animals will be spayed or neutered and given full medical checkups.
"Puppy mills" are companies that breed dogs for sale to pet stores and are not illegal.
According to the Humane Society of the United States, "In most states, a breeding kennel can legally keep dozens, even hundreds, of dogs in cages for their entire lives, as long as the dogs are given the basics of food, water, and shelter."
According to Beth Stern, Spokesperson for the NSALA, "Many of these animals suffer and are neglected, and those that can no longer produce are typically killed or sold at mill dog auctions for as little as 25 cents."
The dogs up for adoption include Pomeranians, Cocker Spaniels, Bichon Frises, Poodles, King Charles Cavaliers and Yorkshire Terriers, among others.
