NEW YORK (WPIX)—
Experienced New Yorkers probably will not even offer a double-take when they see space aliens, a Jedi Knight, a man from Mars or an astronaut board the S train shuttle from Grand Central to Times Square. It is all part of a futuristic effort to convince the NASA powers that be to land one of the three retiring space shuttle orbiters in New York and on the Intrepid for good.
Members of the public have also been encouraged to dress up as their favorite space character, which again in our fair city may not need much goading.
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum already has plans in place to house the shuttle in a huge glass enclosure on the Pier at 46th Street.
If this were to come to fruition officials expect the Shuttle to draw more than one million visitors each year and increase tourist revenue for the city by some $100 million.
