NJ Police Use Tear Gas To End Standoff
HO-HO-KUS, N.J. (WPIX) - Police in New Jersey used tear gas to end a long standoff with a man at a Ho-Ho-Kus home.

Sources identify the gunman as David Grinch, 50, who threatened to take his own life.

The seven-hour standoff began about 9 a.m. this morning, after the man's girlfriend called police and said he had two guns and was depressed. He was packing a .357, a 9mm gun and some rifles, which are all registered.

Sources tell PIX News the man is unemployed.

The Bergen County SWAT team tried to reason with Grinch on the telephone, as he walked around his house, holding a weapon. At one point, they got him to come out of the house, onto the front porch. That's when they noticed self-inflicted wounds to his neck.

At 4 p.m., Grinch fired a round of shots into the air, prompting officers to fire four canisters of tear gas into the house in an effort to smoke him out. Moments later, he emerged from the home and went peacefully with police to an area hospital.

A nearby elementary school was placed on lockdown as a precaution.

No injuries were reported.
