LYNBROOK, N.Y. (WPIX) -
Two teenagers on Long Island, who are aspiring musicians and about to enter the 11th grade, are being hailed as heroes after saving a couple from a burning home.
"I feel great," Gideon Stryker, 15, told PIX News. "How many times can you say you saved people's lives? It's really taking time to sink in...these people can be dead."
After checking out guitars in Manhattan, Stryker and his friend Jake Kayen,15, decided to squeeze in a movie. The film ran longer than they expected, so the pair wound up catching a later train home and were both in jeopardy of being grounded.
But as they walked from the Lynbrook train station down Union Ave. around 1 a.m. they saw smoke.
"As we got closer we saw an orange tint to the smoke," said Stryker. "As we got even closer we saw flames shooting out of the chimney and I called 911 and Jake banged on the door."
Kayen said he could see a television playing through a window and assumed people were inside.
"The couple came to the door and had no idea," said Lynbrook Fire Chief Anthony Decarlo.
Firefighters worked to knock down the fast moving blaze believed to be sparked by an electric short in the attic. Chief DeCarlo said undoubtedly the teens quick-thinking saved the elderly couple inside.
It also helped get them out of trouble.
"My mom was telling me she had a whole plan to ground me," laughed Kayen.
All in all, the teenagers are just glad they were in the right place at the right time and if for some reason their music careers don't pan out, there will always be a spot for them at the Lynbrook Fire Department.
"We have applications for you guys down at the fire department," said a smiling DeCarlo.
