White Plains home owners could face the highest property tax increase in two decades.

If the proposed 2010-11 budget is passed property taxes would go up a whopping 18.9 percent.

White Plains Council President Tom Roach told PIX News that the council is committed to fighting the property tax increase as it is currently proposed.

In order to do that, the council will have have to find other ways to slash spending.

Roach said White Plains is in this mess largely because of the sharp drop in commercial sales tax revenue from businesses hurt by the downturn in the economy.

The clock is ticking to find away to come up with an alternative to the sky high proposed property tax increase.

The budget must be approved by May 30th.
