A few years ago, Retired Master Sergeant Mark Evans of Elk Grove, IL, and his teenage son Kent were watching the game and Kent asked his Dad if soldiers got to eat pizza, and if not, could they send some for the Super Bowl? So started the non-profit organization Pizzas4Patriots, which has since sent over 70,000 deep-dish Chicago style pizzas to our troops. (That translates to over 400,000 slices served to more than 200,000 soldiers).
This year's Super Bowl effort will send 10,000 deep-dish pizzas to our troops on the front lines in Afghanistan and Evans has dubbed it OPERATION NOT FORGOTTEN. According to Evans, with the passing of time, some Americans have shifted their attention from the conflicts thousands of miles away, but our troops are still there and we never, ever want to forget them.
For many of our troops, the winter can be long and hard over there, and they look forward to the best football game of the season. Helping them to enjoy it with pizza a great way to say 'thank you," and we hope this will be our LAST delivery!
Retired Army Colonel Tony Sloan, who helped coordinate the effort on behalf of the military, joined the father and son to talk about the importance of this initiative.
