WAKEFIELD, N.Y. (WPIX)—
A six-alarm fire consumed a row of shops, injured 12 firefighters, and halted subway service Thursday morning in the Bronx.According to the FDNY, the fire at 4225 White Plains Road, between East 234th and East 235th Streets, in Wafefield began at 12:20 a.m. insides a record store.
It took over 200 firefighters from six fire companies about five hours to extinguish the raging flames.
Heavy smoke and flames caused the MTA to temporarily suspend service in both directions from the 219th Street station to the 241 Street Station on the elevated No. 2 line, which runs along White Plains Road. Free shuttle bus service replaced the No. 2 train during the suspension.
At 6:14 a.m., the MTA issued a notice that service for the subway line had resumed but with residual delays.
About 20 to 30 residents were evacuated and none of them sustained any injuries.
Twelve firefighters sustained minor injuries but reports say one of those firefighersd were more seriously injured than the others.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
