ROOSEVELT, N.Y. (WPIX) - A Roosevelt family received quite the surprise Thursday evening when they discovered a part of a commercial airplane on their lawn.

At first, homeowner Michelle Russell did not know what to make of the suspicious metal sphere. After finding broken branches near it, she realized the object came from up above.

"You can tell they were fresh cuts," Russell told PIX News. "Whatever came down really plucked it off."

When Nassau County police arrived at the home, located at 215 Lincoln Ave., officers found what they described as a three-foot by four-foot cone shaped piece of metal.

An investigation later determined that the object was a 20-pound tail cone that had fallen off of a Tokyo-bound Delta flight shortly after it took off from New York's John F. Kennedy Airport, police said.

Russell, who was not home at the time, said that the location where the cone landed is area of her driveway where her 5-year-old daughter usually plays.

"The children do go out and play especially with the leaves there and that's the spot they would have been in," Russell said.

According to FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac, the passengers were never in any danger as it doesn't need the tail cone to fly. The missing piece was only discovered after the flight landed safely in Tokyo, she said.

Fortunately, no one on the ground was injured.

A spokesperson for Delta says the incident is under investigation.
