BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11)—
"Here we go again" is the sentiment being expressed by Midwood, this as as a new round of swastikas continues to besmirched the neighborhood -- the latest occurring sometime around midnight Saturday.Assemblyman Dov Hikind lives 100 feet from the private driveway targeted with the phrase "Die Jews," surrounded by black swastikas.
"When people see this ultimate symbol of hate, you cannot imagine the pain," Hikind said. "These things have been happening almost every single day in the tri-state area."
The ongoing, anti-semitic markings have police searching for answers. Sunday, crime scene investigators were canvasing the area and analyzing paint patterns. They found a handful of swastikas, some on the side of a house, others near an Orthodox Jewish Boys School.
Assemblyman Dov Hikind told PIX11 that he was also alerted to a vicious anti-Semitic message that someone in the Midwood community received over the weekend. According to Hikind, police now have a copy of that recording, and they are investigating whether it could be connected to the acts of vandalism over the weekend.
The District Manager of Community Board 12 says members have also been working closely with law enforcement.
"We need the police department to do what they can, and they're doing what they can and hopefully we'll find something," Board Manager Wolf Sender said.
Midwood is one of America's largest communities of Holocaust survivors, and neighbors tell us seeing the rise in hate crimes is terrifying.
"I have very small children that can read now. They see the message and ask me what it's about. It's very hard for me to describe what it's about," a local resident explained.
"You wouldn't believe the comments that I hear. 'Does this mean something? Is this the beginning of something?' I tell them no because this is America," Hikind said.
