An armed man was shot and killed by police after he opened fire inside a New York court house Wednesday.

According to authorities, the suspect fired off several bullets just moments after walking inside the lobby of Middletown City Court on James Street in Middletown.

Courthouse officers returned fire, wounding the suspect. The man, who was not immediately identified, was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

The suspect's shotgun was retrieved at the scene.

Among those injured by the hail of bullets include one court officer who suffered non-life threatening injuries.
