Two arrested in brutal subway robbery that left an elderly man on the tracks

Police arrested two suspects who they say pushed an 81-year-old off a subway platform after robbing him of his iPhone.

Jaqua Sowells, 17, and Taheen Herkel, 15, both from Brooklyn, are now charged with attempted murder, robbery and felony assault, according to police. Both were wanted in an incident that happened Friday on the J-line platform at Lorimer Street at around 11:45 a.m.

Investigators say one of the suspects swiped an iPhone from the elderly victim while he was standing on the platform. The octogenarian chased the thief, but the second suspect intervened and pushed the man off the subway platform and onto the trackbed.

The victim, who wasn't immediately identified was helped back onto the platform by witnesses. He was reportedly transported to Woodhull Hospital in stable condition.
