PROSPECT PARK, N.Y. (WPIX)—
A Prospect Park West bike lane slated to be ready for the summer may never be finished after Borough President Marty Markowitz asked city Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Kahn to put a halt to the project."What it's done in my opinion is caused a traffic congestion making it worse than it originally was, and taking away much needed parking from Park Slope residents," said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.
The controversial plan is for a bike lane that stretches from Grand Army Plaza to Bartel Pritches Square and includes a four-foot buffer zone beside it -- leaving one less lane for drivers on the busy Prospect Park West.
The bike lane, which is partially created already, is clearly a favorite among Brooklyn cyclists. "It's a quick way to get around and now it's even a safer way to get around, so I love it for the kids too," said cyclist Sara McCullah.
However, drivers and nearby residents are frustrated by what they believe will be a substantial increase in traffic, something they deem unnecessary considering the route's proximity to Prospect Park, which has a bike lane that running parallel to the proposed route.
