BROOKLYN (WPIX)—
The entire bloody incident was caught on tape, captured by surveillance cameras in multiple locations. The NYPD patrol car versus bike rider accident happened in broad daylight.
It was June 14th, around 3:55 p.m., at the corner of Jay Street and Sands Street in Brooklyn. A violent and bloody car versus bike crash where the victim suffered a busted nose, lip, a broken tooth and a fractured hand.
Prosecutors say the bike rider was thrown through the air after being slammed into by a police car that ran a red light.
According to the Brooklyn District Attorney's office, after the crash, investigators say one cop handed the bleeding biker a tissue, drove off and didn't report a thing.
Greg Mizelle, who regularly rides his bike through the area during rush hour, told PIX 11 News, "You have to be aware of the people walking and you have to be aware of the cab drivers, police vehicles and official vehicles because they come from out of nowhere."
Tonight, NYPD Officer Louis Ramos, with 19 years on the job, has been arrested and suspended.
He made his first court appearance today. He was released on his own recognizance.
Ramos is charged with: assault in the third degree, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting it, and reckless driving.
Brooklyn bike rider Kelly Shea told PIX 11 News, "it's shocking that it could happen but it's not shocking that it did happen."
She's skeptical Officer Ramos will get anything more than a slap on the wrist, pointing to the now notorious Times Square incident seen around the world on YouTube, where a rookie NYPD officer is caught on tape pushing a cyclist to the ground. He got no jail time.
In this case, Officer Ramos' partner has not been charged because she wasn't driving.
PIX 11 News called Officer Ramos' attorney but that call was not returned.
The next court date will be a pre-trial hearing scheduled for July 27th.
