Miami Beach police have arrested two suspects in last Saturday's shooting of a New York City police officer who was in Florida on vacation, the Miami Herald is reporting.Off-duty detective Harold Thomas, 48, was returning to his South Beach hotel around 7 a.m. when he was confronted by two men who tried to rob him, shooting him in the leg in the process.
Police have arrested Francisco Henriquez, 35, and Mustafa Lee, 28, in connection with the robbery. Both men have been charged with attempted felony murder.
Police responding to the scene found Thomas unconscious and bleeding heavily, according to reports. They got a break in the case when hospital officials in Plantation, Fl, roughly 30 miles away, called Miami police later that day to report that a man had checked himself in with bullet wounds. The injured man was later identified as Mustafa Lee.
Both Lee and Henriquez have long criminal histories, and the latter was on probation at the time of the shooting, according to the Miami-Dade police.
