PROSPECT HEIGHTS (WPIX) - A Brooklyn mother died early Tuesday, after being struck by a state corrections officer who was on his way to work, police said.

According to detectives, Damon Padmore, 38, was traveling northbound on Flatbush Avenue at St. Marks sometime after 5 a.m. when his 1999 Ford Expedition struck 38-year-old Dorothea Wallce, who was crossing at the intersection.

Responding paramedics transported the victim to Methodist Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Padmore, who is a 12-year veteran corrections officer at Sing Sing Prison, was arrested at the scene for having a suspended license, police said.

Christian Jannirere, who lives in the same Flatbush apartment building as Wallace, told PIX News she's devastated over the incident.

"It's just wrong," said Jannirere. "I just saw her yesterday on the elevator....and now she is gone."

Joyce Padmore told PIX News she had no idea her son was driving illegally. She said he lives in Ossining, near the prison, but had been staying with her in Brooklyn after she became ill. She said he was on his way to work this morning when he struck Wallace.

"He tried to be the best son he could be," she said.

It's unlikely the corrections officer will do any prison time. Padmore was charged with driving with a suspended license, which is a misdemeanor, and was given 3 summonses
