NEW YORK (PIX11)—
As the Occupy Wall Street protests move into their second month, a small group of demonstrators has plans to up the ante -- hitting the road from New York on foot towards the nation's capital. The group kicked off their two-week, 240-mile march on Wednesday at noon when dozens departed Liberty Square in Manhattan to McPherson Square in Washington D.C.
According to Kelly Brannon, the march's organizer, the group will most likely grow as it moves south as they plan on picking up supporters along the way.
The goal, Brannon said, is to reach Washington by November 23 which is the deadline for a congressional committee to decide whether to uphold President Barack Obama's extension of Bush-era tax cuts.
Once in Washington, the group will protest retaining the Bush tax cuts they say only benefit wealthy Americans.
"There will be 2 trillion dollars in revenues saved if the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire," the group behind the NYCmarch2DC published on their blog. "Some personal incomes of the Super Committee members fall in the 1% therefore it is easy for them to make decisions that affect the 99% as they themselves are not affected by those decisions."
"The Super Committee may simply extend their deadline (as is often the case), but either way we want to be there to fight for the 99% with Occupy DC!"
The group also published their complete route for the next two weeks which includes stops in Trenton, Philadelphia and Baltimore.
Demonstrators who signed up for the epic march say they plan to camp out overnight or seek shelter at volunteered locations.
