WAYNE, N.J. (WPIX) - An unlikely find in a New Jersey town Sunday as authorities discovered three pipe bombs and cans of gun powder along the side of Cole Street near Black Oak Ridge Road in Wayne, according to authorities.

Passaic County Sheriff Jerry Speziale said the explosive devices were safely detonated after investigators determined they were active, with live fuses. Authorities also reportedly ignited the container filled with black gunpowder around 8:15 p.m.

"It was a very large explosion," resident Edward Sawey told PIX News. "If something like that had happened other than an isolated area like this...it's a shame to think what would have happened."

The pipe bombs were found in a black plastic bag around 3:30 p.m. after authorities received a call from two men who had apparently heard about the bombs. The Sheriff's office described the devices as one inch in diameter, ranging in length from seven to 15 inches.

Authorities evacuated homes in the area as a precaution and shut down several roads.

"Police started showing up, we started seeing more and more," said Anthony Cheski. "We saw them interviewing people..and then they shut the road down."

Wayne Police Chief Donald Southamer said several persons of interest, all males, were being interviewed in connection with the incident.
