NEW YORK (WPIX)—
A man was killed in a car accident early Wednesday morning on the Brooklyn Bridge.According to police, the driver of a grey 2008 Honda Accord was traveling northbound, towards Manhattan, on the bridge at around 4:10am when it crashed into the rear of a stationary yellow 1991 Ford dump truck.
The truck belongs to the Department of Transportation and had lit, yellow arrows atop its cab to alert motorists that they would have to go around the truck and temporarily merge onto one lane. The truck also had signs indicating that there was ongoing bridge repairs and was equipped with an energy absorption mechanism on its rear, according to police.
"This car was literally trashed, the whole first half of it. It was a horrible accident," said PIX's Linda Church, who was on the Brooklyn Bridge at the time of the accident.
"He somehow hit the back of this big bridge truck with all the yellow arrows," said Church, "Hard to say how he missed it but clearly he missed it and clearly he was going very fast."
The 36-year-old male driver of the sedan was rushed to Beekman Downtown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim's name was not released, pending family notification.
Highway officials are investigating the crash.
