HOLBROOK, N.Y. (WPIX) - A Wading River mother was arrested and charged Tuesday after police say she left her 2-year-old twins strapped in their car seats in her parked vehicle while she shopped at Costco in Holbrook.

Officers responded to a report of two children left in a locked, running vehicle in the Costco parking lot at 125 Beacon Drive around 12:05 p.m. After discovering the children in the parked car, an officer shattered the front right window of the vehicle to get the infants out, police said.

Authorities believe the children, one who has Down Syndrome, were left unattended for at least 45 minutes. Police say the twins were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center where they were evaluated. It's unclear whether they suffered any injuries.

The mother, Lynn Hoenig, 40, was arrested when she returned to her vehicle. Hoenig was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

PIX News has learned that Child Protective Service was notified about the incident.
