As MTA holds hearings on proposed fare hikes this week, the Transportation Authority Chairman is defending the hiring and promotion of millions of dollars worth of managers.

PIX 11's Greg Mocker questioned Jay Walder about the positions. Walder says MTA is on track to save $550 million dollars from aggressive cost-cutting programs. "We will continue to have people in place to run this business," Walder says.

Mocker asked Walder why that includes a senior writer. The job is currently being advertised right now with a job description that includes speechwriting and as much as a $100,000 salary.

Walder says communications functions at MTA have been consolidated.
