FORT LEE, N.J. (WPIX)—
It didn't take police long to catch up with the man they say used his car as a murder weapon in Fort Lee Monday. He repeatedly ran over his former girlfriend who had put an end to their tumultuous relationship. On Tuesday, 26-year-old Charles Ann began the long process that could land him in prison for the rest of his life.According to the first-degree murder charge, Ann intentionally ran down 25-year-old Aena Hong as she was apparently snubbing his attempts to resume a failed relationship. He followed her as she walked along the street.
Witnesses said the car gunned down the street, seemingly taking aim for the woman. They watched in disbelief as he used his Hyundai Sonata as a weapon:
One man tried to stop the enraged driver who abandoned his car and was tracked to a friends home in Flushing, Queens where he was arrested at 4 a.m. He had his passport and a large amount of cash on him, leading police to speculate he was going to leave the country.
Police placed evidence markers along the street. A surveillance camera at the Fort Lee Community Center could nail a conviction. It's believed to have recorded the horror of the moment.
Police consider Ann a ruthless killer filled with rage. His neighbors in his building, overlooking the George Washington Bridge, said he was a nice guy who never showed signs of being capable of such a crime.
But the victim's language teacher, Mira Park, painted a different picture and said he was agitated when she met him. She also claimed that he had mental issues.
Ann stood dazed and confused in Queens Criminal Court late Tuesday where he had an extradition hearing.
After conferring with his court appointed attorney and a Korean translator, he signed the waiver. He'll be held until Friday when Bergen County Prosecutors detectives bring him back to New Jersey to be arraigned on the first degree murder charge.
Ann's bail is set at $3 million.
