NEW YORK (WPIX)—
New York City is a one cowboy town -- at least according to the famous Naked Cowboy of Times Square who recently sent a cease-and-desist letter to Sandra Brodsky, 50, also known as "the Naked Cowgirl."Brodsky has been appearing for the past two years in an American flag-clad bikini with a guitar, an act quite similar to that of the Naked Cowboy, Robert Burck. However, Kane says she simply wants to entertain New Yorkers in Times Square, not by striking sexy poses -- like the naked cowboy -- but by making people laugh.
"Hello, I'm going topless right now," Kane said to shouts of, "No, No."
Burck says Brodsky's act is too similar and it is a violation of his trademark, which is comprised of strumming his guitar in nothing but his white cowboy boots, underwear and cowboy hat.
As a result, the Naked Cowboy says Sandy needs to cough up $500 a month or $5,000 a year for a franchise license for his trademark brand. However, Sandy says she doesn't need any stinking papers.
"For my dog I do....it's all BS," Kane told PIX 11 News. "$5,000?! I don't make that. What do I make? Look, if I make $5 million, I wouldn't want to pay someone money who doesn't deserve it."
However, PIX 11 News caught Burck singing a different tune in Times Square.
"I'm the naked cowboy," he sang. "You got to be consistent with the brand....you just can't do anything."
The Naked Cowboy says Times Square is big enough for a dozen naked cowboys or cowgirls.
Louisa Holmlund is cashing in on the act and gladly paying the franchise fee.
"This is how I'm supporting myself and making some money for school," said Holmlund.
There is good news and bad news to this story -- depending on which naked cowgirl you prefer. Holmlund will be here only for the summer and Sandy says she's not going anywhere.
"I don't think he's got a leg to stand on as far as owning anything, this is Times Square that's the beauty of it. Its free," said Kane.
