Tollbooth Bandits Rob New Jersey Turnpike Attendants
NEW JERSEY (WPIX) - Police are searching for at least two tollbooth bandits who stole a couple hundred dollars from attendants on the New Jersey Turnpike Sunday morning.

According to authorities, a black Jeep without license plates, drove up to the toll booth leading to Route 3 and the Lincoln Tunnel around 5:40 a.m., with a handgun and robbed the toll collector. Just a few minutes later another collector was robbed at gunpoint by someone in a white Mercedes. The vehicle was reported carjacked just an hour before the robberies.

One of the robberies, which occurred near exit 15X is among the least-trafficked exists on the New Jersey Turnpike. According to officials the exit ramp lets out onto a deserted-like area full of warehouses, rail lines and marshes, making it easy for crooks to hold-up a toll booth attendant.

New Jersey officials believe the separate robberies are linked, and say the robbers couldn't have gotten away with a significant amount of money, because toll booth attendants rarely have more than $200 at the end of a shift.
