NEW YORK (AP) - The polls have closed in New York City, where Mayor Michael Bloomberg is favored to win a third term today.

But it's predicted he'll win by a smaller margin than the nearly 20-point blowout he pulled off in 2005.

Bloomberg and Democratic rival William Thompson Jr. surfaced early at their own Manhattan polling places.

After voting at a school on the Upper East Side, Bloomberg took $1 from his wallet and made a bake sale purchase. Said the mayor: "Poll numbers go up and down. The only poll that matters is the one being taken today."

Thompson, who's currently the city comptroller, arrived at his polling place with family members in tow. He gave a thumbs-up as he left the voting booth at a school in Harlem. He said he felt "very positive."

Bloomberg is likely to burn through more than $100 million on this election. Thompson is expected to spend one-tenth of that.

Meanwhile, New York City is poised to elect its first Asian-American to citywide office.

Democrat John Liu is expected to easily defeat his Republican challenger, Joe Mendola, for comptroller.

Liu's family emigrated from Taiwan when he was a child.

He has served on the City Council since 2002, representing parts of Queens. He also was the first Asian-American on the council.

Mendola is a lawyer who has not held public office.

The comptroller audits city agencies and oversees the municipal pension system.
