The movie is called Third Jihad and was funded by a pro-Israel group. In one clip an Imam says, "On our website we talk of having an Islamic state of North America by 2050." There are scenes of a bombed-out world Trade Center following the 9/11 attacks, and ominous music. Bodies can be seen carried on stretchers.
The commissioner's critics say there is no way cops should be watching such a film and a large number showed up on the steps of city hall Thursday to call on the city's top cop and his deputy to step down. Chanting "Kelly must go, Kelly must go," they waved signs and took aim at the commissioner.
The film suggests even moderate Muslim groups can be deceptive.but was shown over and over at a police facility where cops being trained in chemical warfare detection saw it.
There's a credibility problem. Initially Kelly's spokesman said the commissioner never sat down for an interview for the film. But in the film he says, "about 18% on last count of prisoners in New York state are Islamic."
Now Browne has had to backtrack. Kelly says he did give the interview back in 2007 to a former Dateline NBC producer who had worked in the Clinton White House.
His spokesman said, "He would not have done the interview, if he had known it was not going to be a straight documentary." The commissioner says it was not a part of any training but many in the Muslim community are calling for the his head. Including council member Jumaane Williams who attended the protest and has butted heads with the NYPD in the past. He told the crowd, "This is a continuing problem that needs to be addressed."
They cite their complaints about the NYPD counter terrorism unit allegedly spying on the Arab community in saying they want Kelly out, but Mayor Bloomberg is offering Kelly his 100% support saying "Commissioner Kelly should not step down."
