DEER PARK, N.Y. (WPIX) - A would-be-robber was shot to death early Tuesday morning by an on off-duty Nassau County police officer at a car wash in Deer Park, officials confirmed.

The detective, who has been on the force for 16 years, was assaulted and robbed by two men at a self-serve car wash on Bay Shore Road shortly after 3 a.m. He was able to shoot one of the assailants, while the second suspect was later tracked down and arrested, police said.

Authorities said one man was armed with a baseball bat and approached the victim as he was cleaning out his car.

Police have not released the identity of the officer, claiming he is a victim of a crime. The extent of his injuries are also unclear at this time.

Authorities are investigating the incident.
