NEW YORK (WPIX)—
The City Council passed legislation Monday giving drivers a five-minute grace period in some no-parking zones throughout the city. The 47-2 vote in favor of the measure, means the council has the 34 votes needed to override the veto promised by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. When he learned of the news, Bloomberg said the legislation will lead to "chas" and ultimately increase the number of ticket disputes.
Under the bill, drivers would be granted an extra five minutes past the expired time on Muni-Meters and parking regulations, known mostly as alternate-side rules.
City Councilman Simcha Felder, who sponsored the bill, said far too many drivers are given "gotcha tickets" minutes after the meter or posted time has expired.
Last year, the city collected nearly $596 million in parking fines. This year, the city is expected to collect $690 million.
