Gov. David Paterson's Shaky Political Future
Share Your Thoughts On This Story
NEW YORK (WPIX) -
Governor Paterson reportedly is preparing to respond to scandalous rumors that have been swirling around him for the past ten days. A political source tells PIX News the governor will meet with editors of the New York Times tomorrow to answer questions regarding their investigation into his personal conduct.
The Times had been expected to publish a "bombshell" story as early as Monday, and that the governor's resignation was likely to follow.
According to a source, the story hasn't run yet because reporters were seeking additional corroboration and because attempts were still being made to have the governor respond to the allegations, which reportedly involve the governor and other women in a possible sex scandal. Latest indication is that the Times will run the story Wednesday.
A high ranking Democratic source in Albany says the latest unsubstantiated report making the rounds of the Capitol Monday is that the story involves an alleged affair between the governor and a woman in Buffalo.
As for the rumors that a state trooper caught the governor "snuggling" with a female staffer in a utility closet, another source insists it wasn't the governor who was caught, but a close assistant who was involved with the woman. The girlfriend was purportedly preparing to expose all. An embarrassment to the governor, but it doesn't involve him, according to the source.
The governor's office has vigorously denied all the assertions. Albany insiders confirm Paterson did recently request that State Police leave the Executive Mansion, but not because he was caught in any compromising position with a woman. Reportedly it was a joint decision by the governor and his wife seeking privacy.
A ranking member of the legislature tells PIX News the source of all the salacious rumors is the estranged wife of "an aide extremely close to the governor." Apparently angered over a bitter divorce, she began circulating so-called "inside" stories about the governor that only his closest allies would know about.
Three Democratic Congressional sources say the pressure continues for the governor not to run for office. They fear his candidacy will hurt the rest of the Democratic ticket in November. As for reports that he's preparing to resign, a Party insider insists, "No resignation is imminent...at least not today."
