PATERSON, N.J. (WPIX)—
A relative was arrested in the case of a 5-year-old boy who died Sunday night after he was accidentally shot in the head by a 6-year-old, police said.According to Passaic County Chief Assistant Prosecutor John Latoracca, the 6-year-old child, who has not been identified, was playing with the victim inside a bedroom of a Kearney St. home when the two discovered a .380 gun sometime after 8 p.m.
While they were playing, the 5-year-old identified as Daron Mayes, suffered a gun shot wound to the back of the head, police said.
Mayes was rushed to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center where doctors pronounced him dead.
The owner of the gun, 23-year-old Jalik Jones, was not at home during the time of the incident. He was later arrested and charged with reckless manslaughter.
Police later revealed that the two boys involved in the shooting were related, but wouldn't immediately say how.
