Philly newspaper declares Phillies World Series winners

Philly newspaper declares Phillies World Series winners (THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER / November 2, 2009)

PHILADELPHIA (WPIX) - Oops. A Philadelphia newspaper is apologizing to readers Monday, after it mistakenly ran an ad congratulating the Philadelphia Phillies on winning back-to-back World Series titles.

The ad appeared in Monday's edition of The Philadelphia Inquirer which hit newsstands several hours after the New York Yankees snagged another win in the championship. Sunday's win gave the Bronx Bombers a comfortable 3-1 lead in the series.

The three-quarter-page Macy's ad praised the Phillies for being "Back To Back World Series Champions." The black and white promotion was apparently advertising Phillies merchandise available at the department store.

"A Macy's advertisement in today's Philadelphia Inquirer incorrectly offered Phillies 2009 World Championship merchandise," Vice President of National Advertising Howard Griffin said in a statement. "The Inquirer deeply regrets this error. Macy's is a great corporate citizen, supporter of this region and our sports teams. We apologize for this error and any inconvenience this caused."

The Yanks will face off with the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia Monday, where they are just one victory away from their 27th World Series title.
