An animal activist from New York is facing assault charges after she smashed a pie into the face of Canada's fisheries minister Gail Shea.

Shea was delivering a speech in Burlington, Ontario when Emily McCoy, a New York member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), rushed up to the podium with a tofu pie and smashed it in the lawmaker's face.

McCoy, who claims she was protesting Canada's seal hunting program, was arrested after the incident. She was charged with assault.

Shea was left unhurt from the pie attack and said afterward she was more determined than ever to support the seal hunt.

Although PETA officials claim they had nothing to do with organizing the attack, they weren't quick to condone McCoy's actions.

"A little tofu pie on her face is hardly comparable to the blood on Ms. Shea's hands," PETA's executive vice-president said in a statement.
